Non-toxic living: toilet bowl ring
I wish I was kidding when I say the hard water rings in our toilets was a source of marital stress. My husband was convinced if I would just let him dump bleach into the toilet, they would disappear. I was convinced that not only would that not work, I would end up with a headache and likely a bloody nose. Both of us were convinced the other wasn’t scrubbing hard enough.
Alas. Our troubles have been solved. (I’m being dramatic but this problem is definitely figured out.)
I’ll spare you the details and get to it. These before and after pictures were taken exactly 5 minutes apart and this includes time spent walking around my house searching for my phone. This is the simplest (mostly) nontoxic cleaning trick I’ve seen in a while.
Please don’t judge me. We live in an area that has notoriously hard water and I will say that both of these pictures are of a “clean” toilet meaning I scrubbed and sanitized before any photos were snapped.
The original post for this cleaning method was at theforkedspoon. While she uses Barkeepers Friend to protect your porcelain, I had Kohler Cast Iron Kitchen and Bathroom Cleaner from a previous project and I like it because it has no odor.
You will need:
3M DRYWALL SANDING SCREEN, CUT INTO A SMALL PEICE (APPROX 2IN X 2IN)
Kohler CAST IRON (or some other type of non abrasive porcelain cleaner)
REUSABLE RUBBER GLOVES
This should all cost less than $20 depending on the size package of drywall screens you get. I got the big one because that’s what Home Depot was selling that day.
DIRECTIONS:
PUT A GENEROUS DOLLOP OF PORCELAIN CLEANER ON YOUR SANDING SREEN, ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GRAPE.
SCRUB HARD WATER STAINS WITH GENTLE CIRCULAR MOTIONS. FOR STUBBORN STAINS, YOU MAY NEED TO REAPPLY CLEANER AND GO OVER A SECOND TIME
That’s it! This required very minimal elbow grease on my part and I had no reaction to cleaners which is so important.
While I recognize that this isn’t a completely nontoxic cleaning method, the goal was met. I got the clean I desired without having to sacrifice my body, my health, or the rest of my day in the process.
And if you have a cleaner that fits the “nontoxic” role or if there is a similar topic you’d like to see here, let me know!
